Chapter 13

Two Young Bulls

Aidan heard the plane start to descend before he could see it in the morning sun. He wasn’t expecting Goose today, so this made him nervous.

He lifted the rifle that had been leaning on the newly built shed, not knowing who was landing on his property, and started to make his way toward the dock. As he got closer, he realized it was Dylan’s plane and wondered if something had happened at home.

As he placed the gun down on an Adirondack chair just before he made it to the dock, he heard the lodge door open and turned to see Niñita step outside.

Snapping his eyebrows together, Aidan yelled, “Go inside, Hanna.” It ended up coming out angrier than he had intended.

She leered at him with overwhelming hostility before turning and slamming the door on her way back inside.

He hated that he lost control when Hanna’s safety was at risk. It had already been a quiet week, since Hanna still refused to speak to him or be in his presence at any given time, and it was killing him. He had tried to apologize, but she would walk away like he hadn’t spoken. Any and all hope he had of a future with this woman slowly diminished day by day.

He knew he had overreacted during the confrontation with the bears, but he had warned her countless times and she had ignored it. His fear overrode his sound judgment when he had chastised her like a child, exactly like he had done a second ago. When push came to shove, he always resorted to acting like his domineering papá. Her reaction was his penance.

His last thought was, The sins of his father will always manifest in the prodigal son.

When Dylan landed, Aidan tensed when he saw he wasn’t alone, but before he could make a move, Ethan was opening the plane’s door.

“It’s okay, Aidan. They’re with me.”

Still not trusting the men exiting the plane, he crossed his arms over his chest. “Who are they, and what do they want? Why are you here?”

“They’re police officers. A lot has happened, and they need to speak to Hanna,” her brother said, jumping onto the dock.

“Ethan!” Hanna screamed, running out of the lodge.

Aidan shook his head. Would this woman ever listen to him?

“Slow down before you fall,” he barked out. “Even though you’re walking better, your ankle is still weak. Don’t come onto the dock. Wait right where you are.”

She slammed on the brakes, throwing her hands to her hips. “You’re not my keeper! I’m not one of your women. I’ll do what I want when I want.”

Shifting her angry expression to her brother, she told him, “I want to go home. Right now.”

Chris tensed beside Andrew. “Miss O’Shea, if that’s what you want, I’ll make sure it happens.” He already didn’t like Aidan, and the way he was speaking to Shavon’s sister solidified that his feelings weren’t misplaced.

Ethan whipped his head toward Chris with unleashed fury, his nostrils flaring and his jaw thrust out.
